Lightweight winter sleeping bag for cold mountain tours

The "Biopod DownWool-Hybrid Ice Alpin" is a sophisticated sleeping bag with DownWool Hybrid insulation and a sophisticated chamber design. An optional carbon heating element for emergency use provides the necessary safety buffer on cold mountain tours around freezing temperatures.

Grüezi bag® sleeping bags offer the best sleeping comfort and functionality

Grüezi bag sleeping bags have received numerous awards for their excellent insulation and well-thought-out designs.

  • DownWool hybrid construction for drier down  With conventional winter sleeping bags, moisture often condenses on the inside of the outer material, dripping onto the down and reducing its insulation performance. Grüezi bag® takes an innovative approach: A layer of Alpine wool reliably protects the high-quality, animal welfare-certified (RDS-certified) European goose down (fill power 800+ cuin) from moisture. The wool layer absorbs the resulting moisture, transports it to the outside, and keeps the down permanently dry. The result: optimal protection against moisture from both inside and out – and consistently high insulation performance.
  • Wider temperature range: DownWool hybrid sleeping bags have a wider temperature range in which you feel comfortable. Wool balances out temperature fluctuations.
  • More sleep, more energy: The body needs a lot of energy to regulate its temperature. Wool supports this process thanks to its excellent temperature-regulating properties.
  • Lightweight and small when packed: thanks to the body-fitting mummy shape.
  • Prevention of cold bridges: An Alpine wool layer construction on the top as well as an elaborate chamber system consisting of box and H-chambers (V-shaped) and additional side chambers guarantee even heat distribution, prevent cold bridges and ensure that the down does not slip.
  • Carbon heating element : This can be optionally retrofitted and can be easily operated with a standard power bank. After a strenuous hike, we recommend preheating the sleeping bag for 10-15 minutes to optimally support your body's recovery.
  • Anti-slip studs: They prevent slipping off the insulation mat and thus ensure a stable sleeping place.
  • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification: Grüezi bag® products are harmless to human health.

FEATURES

  • Adjustable hood with face baffle: The thermal baffle adapts perfectly to the shape of your head. When it's cold, only a small hole remains open, reducing heat loss from the face.
  • 3D thermal collar: Closes automatically in the zipper area, so there is no cold bridge in the zipper area.
  • Drawstring pocket: To ensure that the drawstring on the thermal collar does not get in the way, it is safely stored in a simple drawstring pocket.
  • Inside & outside pocket: For valuables and things you prefer to keep close to you.
  • Zipper:
    • Two-way auto-lock zipper: The zipper can be opened and closed from either end, inside or outside. The auto-lock prevents it from opening accidentally.
    • White zipper: This makes it easier to find the zipper in the dark.
    • Zipper with anti-snag zipper and lined robust webbing: This makes the zipper even easier to operate without pinching the outer fabric.
    • Zipper with lined zipper cover: So that heat cannot escape and no cold bridges are created.
  • Elaborately pre-shaped foot box: With many chambers to avoid cold spots and plenty of space for the toes
  • Feater loops: The warming hip bag with heating element (Feater - The Feet Heater) can be installed additionally.
  • Chamber construction: Box chambers , H-chambers (V-shaped), additional sidewall construction , AlmWolle layer construction on the top
  • Anti-slip nubs on the back: These prevent the sleeping bag from slipping on an insulation mat.

WHAT IS DOWNWOOL-HYBRID?

The special feature of this sleeping bag is its innovative hybrid insulation. The insulation is naturally more resistant to high humidity. In a DownWool-Hybrid sleeping bag, you immediately feel the wide comfort temperature range where you're neither too cold nor too warm.

This is achieved through the innovative layered construction made from high-quality, animal welfare-certified (RDS-certified) European goose down (800+ cuin) and a layer of wool from the Alps. This patented combination acts like a light and natural climate control system.

Down: excellent insulation – but only when dry!

High-quality down insulates exceptionally well with minimal weight. However, in high humidity (air, sweat, condensation), down clumps and loses its insulating properties. Grüezi bag solves this problem with an innovative 2-layer construction of wool and down.

Wool: effective moisture and temperature regulation

Thanks to the wool layer in DownWool-Hybrid, the down stays naturally drier and retains its insulating power. At winter temperatures, the human body releases up to 1.5 liters of sweat overnight. This moisture evaporates in the sleeping bag and condenses at sub-zero temperatures on the inside of the outer shell, dripping onto the down and impairing its performance. The wool layer in Grüezi bag® hybrid sleeping bags absorbs the moisture and releases it outward, so the down stays dry and continues to insulate effectively. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture via capillaries and gradually release it.

DownWool-Hybrid not only regulates moisture effectively but also body temperature. Wool prevents chilling through evaporative cooling and retains its warming properties even when damp, something no other material can achieve.

Wool naturally creates a comfortable microclimate due to its unique climate-balancing properties and also neutralizes unpleasant odors.

The result: excellent insulation and a wide temperature comfort zone where you can sleep well. In addition, DownWool-Hybrid is more resistant to high humidity, making Grüezi bag® sleeping bags high-performing even below freezing.

CARE

Washing

  • Washing instructions are found inside the sleeping bag.
  • The sleeping bag can be washed by hand or on the wool cycle in the machine at max. 30°C / 86°F using down detergent.
  • Turn the bag inside out, zip it closed, use an extra rinse cycle, and do not use fabric softener.
  • After washing, loosen it up a bit and spin again at max. 600 RPM.

Drying

  • Dry in a tumble dryer at max. 60°C / 140°F and always add 2–3 tennis balls to help fluff the insulation.
  • Repeat drying cycles as needed. After each cycle, remove, shake, and let it cool down before continuing.
  • Use the timed dry program to fully dry the down.
  • If no dryer is available, lay the sleeping bag flat on a drying rack in sunlight and shake it regularly so air can reach all sides.

How to know it’s dry

  • If the bag hasn’t regained its full loft, keep drying until it feels fuller than before.
  • Depending on the outer fabric’s waterproofing, drying may take at least 2 days.
  • Down must be completely dry. If not properly dried and fluffed, the down can clump, causing irreversible damage.
  • A fully dry product feels thicker and fuller. Damp down may have an unpleasant odor, but this disappears after drying.

TIP

  • Down sleeping bags should occasionally be dried with tennis balls in a dryer even after use, to remove residual moisture.
  • Store sleeping bags loosely and dry in their storage sack.
When packing into the compression sack, always stuff from the foot end—do not roll or fold.
  • Better than washing is airing out the sleeping bag. DownWool-Hybrid® sleeping bags rarely need washing thanks to wool’s natural odor-resistant and dirt-repelling properties.
  • For small stains, gently clean the affected area only. Heavily soiled sleeping bags can be machine washed.
  • Always use a sleeping mat under the bag. Insulation gets compressed under the body and cannot trap air (and thus heat) effectively. More about choosing the right mat can be found on the website here.

Elaborate box and side chamber construction

In the chest area, the chambers on the inside of the sleeping bag are divided into individual compartments. This prevents the down from shifting and thus preventing cold spots from forming. The sleeping bag also has side chambers. When turning, the insulation often slips away from the shoulder; however, the side chambers secure the down, keeping the shoulder and the entire sleeping bag warm.
