Winter sleeping bag for demanding expedition tours

The "Biopod DownWool-Hybrid Ice Extreme" is a sophisticated sleeping bag with DownWool Hybrid insulation, a sophisticated baffle construction, and an integrated carbon heating element for emergency use. It was developed for use well below freezing for winter expeditions.

Grüezi bag® sleeping bags offer the best sleeping comfort and functionality

Grüezi bag sleeping bags have received numerous awards for their excellent insulation and well-thought-out designs.

  • DownWool hybrid construction for drier down  With conventional winter sleeping bags, moisture often condenses on the inside of the outer material, dripping onto the down and reducing its insulation performance. Grüezi bag® takes an innovative approach: A layer of Alpine wool reliably protects the high-quality, animal welfare-certified (RDS-certified) European goose down (fill power 800+ cuin) from moisture. The wool layer absorbs the resulting moisture, transports it to the outside, and keeps the down permanently dry. The result: optimal protection against moisture from both inside and out – and consistently high insulation performance.
  • Wider temperature range: DownWool hybrid sleeping bags have a wider temperature range in which you feel comfortable. Wool balances out temperature fluctuations.
  • More sleep, more energy: The body needs a lot of energy to regulate its temperature. Wool supports this process thanks to its excellent temperature-regulating properties.
  • Well-thought-out cut for optimal freedom of movement: The comfortable cut allows the body to assume a relaxed position, ensuring a peaceful, restful sleep. Even in the mummy shape, you can sleep more soundly, as you can turn around both on your side with your leg bent and within the sleeping bag.
  • Lightweight and small when packed: thanks to the body-fitting mummy shape.
  • Prevention of cold bridges: An Alpine wool layer construction on the top as well as an elaborate chamber system consisting of box and H-chambers (V-shaped) and additional side chambers guarantee even heat distribution, prevent cold bridges and ensure that the down does not slip.
  • Integrated carbon heating element: a backup for emergencies such as illness or a sudden drop in temperature (just 20 minutes of preheating is sufficient for the entire night).
  • Anti-slip studs: They prevent slipping off the insulation mat and thus ensure a stable sleeping place.
  • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification: Grüezi bag® products are harmless to human health.
  • Made in Germany

FEATURES

  • Adjustable hood with face baffle: The thermal baffle adapts perfectly to the shape of your head. When it's cold, only a small hole remains open, reducing heat loss from the face.
  • 3D thermal collar: Closes automatically in the zipper area, so there is no cold bridge in the zipper area.
  • Drawstring pocket:  To ensure that the drawstring on the thermal collar does not get in the way, it is safely stored in a simple drawstring pocket.
  • Inside & outside pocket: For valuables and things you prefer to keep close to you.
  • Two-way auto-lock zipper: The zipper can be opened and closed from either end, inside or outside. The auto-lock prevents it from opening accidentally.
  • White zipper: This makes it easier to find the zipper in the dark.
  • Zipper with anti-snag zipper and lined robust webbing:  This makes the zipper even easier to operate without pinching the outer fabric.
  • Zipper with lined zipper cover: So that heat cannot escape and no cold bridges are created.
  • Elaborately pre-shaped foot box:  With many chambers to avoid cold spots and plenty of space for the toes
  • Feater loops: The warming hip bag with heating element (Feater - The Feet Heater) can be installed additionally.
  • Chamber construction: Box chambers , H-chambers (V-shaped), additional sidewall construction , AlmWolle layer construction on the top
  • Removable carbon heating element in the foot area: The heating element can be operated with a standard power bank (USB port is located in the inside pocket) and is washable at 30 °C.
    • Heating time: The heating element heats up to a maximum of 40°C to achieve an optimal comfort temperature. Approximately 15-30 minutes are sufficient, after which the sleeping bag stores the heat and stays warm throughout the night.
    • Info: The operating time of a power bank with 5,000 mAh is approx. 1.8 hours / with 10,000 mAh approx. 3.6 hours.
  • Anti-slip nubs on the back: These prevent the sleeping bag from slipping on an insulation mat.

WHAT IS DOWNWOOL-HYBRID?

What makes this sleeping bag special is its innovative hybrid insulation. This insulation is naturally more resistant to high humidity. In a DownWool Hybrid sleeping bag, you immediately feel the broad comfort temperature range where you are neither too cold nor too warm.

This is achieved through an innovative layer construction of high-quality, animal welfare-certified (RDS-certified) European goose down (800+ cuin) and a layer of wool from the Alps. This patented combination acts like a lightweight and natural climate control system.

Down: Excellent insulation only when dry!
High-quality down insulates exceptionally well at low weight. However, down clumps in high humidity (air, sweat, condensation) and loses its insulating properties. Grüezi bag solves this problem with its innovative two-layer construction of wool and down.

Wool: Effective moisture and temperature regulation
Thanks to the wool layer in the DownWool Hybrid, the down stays naturally drier and maintains its insulating effect. In winter temperatures, a person can sweat up to 1.5 liters per night. This body moisture evaporates inside the sleeping bag and condenses at freezing temperatures on the inner surface of the outer shell, dripping onto the down and reducing its insulating power. The wool layer in Grüezi bag® hybrid sleeping bags absorbs the moisture and releases it outward, keeping the down dry and insulating effectively. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture through its capillaries and gradually release it outward.

DownWool Hybrid not only regulates moisture but also body temperature effectively. Wool prevents evaporative cooling and retains warmth even when damp—something no other material can do. Wool creates a naturally pleasant microclimate with its unique temperature-balancing properties and also neutralizes unpleasant odors.

The result: Excellent insulation and a wide comfort temperature range where you feel good and sleep well. DownWool Hybrid is also more resistant to high humidity, making Grüezi bag® sleeping bags highly effective for sub-zero conditions.

WHAT IS A CARBON HEATING ELEMENT?

  • A sleeping bag only stores the heat a person emits. But often someone is unable to warm themselves or the sleeping bag sufficiently, such as due to exhaustion or illness. Especially the foot area is hard to warm up with cold feet. That's why this sleeping bag includes a heating element (Grüezi bag® Carbon Heating Element), which can be powered by a standard power bank.
  • The sleeping bag becomes comfortably warm within about 15 minutes. The carbon heating element is designed to limit the heating to around 40°C (104°F) to prevent sweating and moisture buildup that could lead to new coldness. It is built into the foot section so that the warmth distributes evenly from bottom to top, while keeping a comfortable distance from the body for restful sleep. The heating element is washable and can be washed together with the sleeping bag.
  •  Please observe the safety instructions.

CARE

Washing

  • Washing instructions are located in the inner pocket of the sleeping bag.
  • The sleeping bag can be washed by hand or in the machine’s wool cycle using down detergent at max. 30°C/86°F. Turn inside out, close the zipper, run an extra rinse cycle, and do not use fabric softener.
  • After washing, take the sleeping bag out, loosen it up a bit, and run a spin cycle at max. 600 rpm.

Drying

  • Dry in a dryer at max. 60°C/140°F and add 2–3 tennis balls for better loft.
  • Repeat drying cycles as needed. After each cycle, remove, shake, fluff, and let cool between cycles.
  • Use a timed program to ensure the down is fully dry.
  • If no dryer is available, lay the sleeping bag on a drying rack in the sun and shake it frequently so air can reach it from both sides.

How to know it's dry

  • If the sleeping bag hasn’t regained its original loft, repeat the drying process until it feels fuller than before. Depending on how waterproof the outer fabric is, drying can take at least 2 days, depending on the dryer model.
  • The down must be completely dry. If not properly dried and fluffed, the down can clump, potentially damaging the sleeping bag irreparably. You’ll know it’s dry when it feels full and thick again. Damp down may smell, but the smell disappears once dry.

TIP

  • Down sleeping bags should occasionally be dried with tennis balls in a dryer, especially after trips, to remove excess moisture.
  • Sleeping bags should be stored dry and open in a storage bag.
When packing into the compression sack, stuff the foot end first—do not roll or fold.
  • Better than washing is airing the bag. DownWool-Hybrid® sleeping bags rarely need washing, as wool naturally resists odor and dirt. For small stains, gently spot clean. If the bag is greasy or heavily soiled, machine wash.
  • Always use a sleeping mat underneath any sleeping bag. The insulation underneath gets compressed and can't trap warm air. You can find more information about proper mats on the website here.

Elaborate box and side chamber construction

In the chest area, the chambers on the inside of the sleeping bag are divided into individual compartments. This prevents the down from shifting and thus preventing cold spots from forming. The sleeping bag also has side chambers. When turning, the insulation often slips away from the shoulder; however, the side chambers secure the down, keeping the shoulder and the entire sleeping bag warm.
